Opponents of democracy gearing up to push forward their agenda of voter suppression in the Texas Legislature
(Press Release) This morning the Texas House Committee on Elections held its first meeting of the 87th Legislative Session. The Committee heard invited testimony from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Secretary of State, and the Office of the Attorney General. Following is a statement from Common Cause Texas Associate Director Stephanie Gómez: “Texas is already one of the hardest states to vote in and it was clear from today’s hearing that the politicians in charge are going to try to make it even harder.
It was disheartening to see politicians and state officials utilize this committee to reaffirm their commitment to the partisan and widely debunked narrative of voter fraud by continuing to funnel misinformation about our election problems – the same dangerous narrative to fueled the deadly white supremacist insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
It’s clear that opponents of our democracy are gearing up to push forward their agenda of voter suppression in the Texas Legislature. Texas is currently handling multiple crises that disproportionately affect Black and brown communities across Texas, and instead of focusing efforts on recovery, the Texas Legislature is doubling down on making it harder for them to cast a ballot. We look forward to working alongside our partners to protect our democracy by fighting for policy solutions that increase accessibility, equity, and participation of Texans in our democratic processes.”
