The City of Eagle Pass, Texas sparkling $16 Million Sports Complex is scheduled to celebrate its grand opening on Friday, April 30, 2021, announced Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes.
The new City of Eagle Pass Sports Complex will include six baseball/softball fields, a football field, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis and volleyball courts, a walking trail, and a water splash area.
The City of Eagle Pass held the groundbreaking ceremony for the new sports complex on December 3, 2019 and general contractor Hellas Construction has been working on the complex since then.
The new City Sports Complex was made possible by a generous philanthropic donation of 124 acres by the C.C. Winn Family. Winn family members will be present at the April 30 grand opening ceremony, said Mayor Sifuentes.
The new City Sports Complex is located on 124 acres near U.S. Highway 277 South (East Main Street) adjacent to the McCoy’s Building Supply store.
Sifuentes added that the new City Sports Complex is a state of the art facility designed to provide the highest quality of public recreational areas. The sports complex will be home to local sports leagues and host sports tournaments in the community, drawing tourists and revenues to local businesses and the City, said Sifuentes.
The $16 Million price tag of the new sports complex was financed by the issuance of $32 Million Certificates of Obligation (bonds) by the Eagle Pass City Council on September 25, 2018 as part of several city projects. The $32 Million Certificates of Obligation are being paid from general revenues of the City of Eagle Pass International Bridge System.
The 124 acres donated by the Winn family for the new City Sports Complex has an estimated value of $2 Million. The Winn family has made many significant philanthropic donations in the community.
The City Sports Complex project was approved by the Eagle Pass City Council during former Mayor Ramsey English Cantu’s tenure.
Sifuentes concluded that the City Sports Complex will enhance the quality of life for citizens of Eagle Pass and provide the finest recreational and athletic fields in the Middle Rio Grande region.
The April 30 Grand Opening ceremony will be open to the public.
