City of Eagle Pass, Texas registered voters head to the poll on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Multi-Purpose Center, 480 S. Adams Street, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on regular Election Day to elect a Mayor, two City Council Places, and either approve or disapprove Proposition A—whether the City can sell designated park land in Carthage Place Subdivision.
After a contentious Early Voting Period that saw 3, 738 voters cast ballots in the May 1, 2021 City Officers Election, Eagle Pass registered voters, numbering over 17,000, have one final day to cast their ballots and make a difference in the hotly contested city election.
The top post on the ballot is for Mayor between 14 months incumbent Luis E. Sifuentes, who is head counselor at Eagle Pass High School, and 14 months City Councilman Rolando Salinas, who is an attorney and a partner at Knickerbocker, Heredia, Salinas, and Salinas law firm. Both candidates have operated well-organized and financed campaigns for the top post in the City. The race for Mayor will go down to the wire as a close race with the candidate encouraging the most supporters to come out to vote.
Another hotly contested race is the one for City Council Place 4 between three candidates—Maricarmen Perales Rangel, who is a counselor at the Eagle Pass Independent School District and a realtor, LeeRoy Euresti, a local entrepreneur, and Monica J. Cruz, a realtor. This race might result in a runoff election unless one candidate is able to pull out a 50.01 percent majority of the votes cast in the election. All three candidates have managed to operate competitive campaigns.
The City Council Place 2 post is held by Elias Diaz who is running unopposed and is guaranteed to win a first full four year term on May 1. Diaz has run an active campaign despite not having any opposition.
The final issue on the May 1 ballot is Proposition A, whether the City of Eagle Pass may sell dedicated park land in Carthage Place Subdivision. Voters will approve or disapprove Proposition A.
All City of Eagle Pass registered voters are encouraged to take 10 minutes of their time on Saturday, May 1, between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to cast their ballots in the key City Officers Election. A democracy is only as strong as its voters participation. Your vote is your voice. Go vote and make a difference in your community.
Election results will be announced after the polls close at 7 p.m. and are counted at the Maverick County Courthouse, 500 Quarry Street, in downtown Eagle Pass.
