City Councilman Rolando Salinas Upsets Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes for Eagle Pass Mayor, City Councilman Place 2 Elias Diaz Wins Unopposed, Monica J. Cruz in Run-Off Election with Maricarmen Perales Rangel in City Council Place 4 Race, and Proposition “A” Defeated by City Voters

The City of Eagle Pass, Texas voters have elected a new Mayor for the community in the City Officers Election of May 1, 2021 as City Councilman Place 4 Rolando Salinas upset incumbent Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes for the top post with a total of 2,752 votes (55.62%) compared to only 2,191 votes (44,33%); City Councilman Place 2 Elias Diaz easily won re-election to a full four-year term unopposed with 3,626 (100%) votes; realtor Monica J. Cruz will go to a run-off election for City Council Place 4 against counselor and realtor, Maricarmen Perales Rangel, with Cruz garnering 2,272 votes (47.77%), Rangel with 1,760 votes (37.01%), and Leeroy Euresti with 724 votes (15.22%); and Proposition “A” whether the City of Eagle Pass could sell park land in Carthage Place Subdivision was defeated with 2,119 votes (51.38%) against” compared to 2,005 votes (48.62%) “For.”
A total of 4,957 voters out of a total of over 17,000 voters in the City of Eagle Pass took the time to go vote in the key May 1, 2021 City Officers Election. Approximately 29.15% of City of Eagle Pass registered voters participated in the important municipal election of May 1, 2021. However, Eagle Pass voters voted for a change at City Council by electing City Councilman Rolando Salinas, an attorney and partner at a local law firm, over incumbent Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes, head counselor at a local high school, to steer the City of Eagle Pass towards new prosperity and progress during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Newly-elected Mayor Rolando Salinas thanked all the citizens of Eagle Pass who came out to vote in the May 1, 2021 City Election and for taking the time to make a difference in our local democracy, while outgoing Mayor Luis E. Sifuentes gave a gracious concession speech asking all Eagle Pass citizens to unite with newly-elected Mayor Rolando Salinas in working together in moving the community towards greater progress and prosperity. Sifuentes vowed to work with Salinas in the smooth transition of power at City Hall and congratulated him on his hard fought victory.
Monica J. Cruz almost pulled out the victory without the necessity of a run-off election, but a third candidate registered enough votes to deny Cruz and/or Rangel a simple majority of the votes for the victory. The City of Eagle Pass will announce shortly the date of the run-off election for City Council Place 4 position between Cruz and Rangel.
Voters defeated Proposition “A”, which called for the City of Eagle Pass to be able to sell park land at Carthage Place Subdivision by a narrow margin with 2,119 votes “Against”compared to 2,005 votes “For.” Voters noted they would prefer the City of Eagle Pass retain its public park area than instead of selling it.
