Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo Resigns

City of Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo has unexpectedly resigned from his post on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, tendering his letter of resignation to Eagle Pass City Manager George Antuna, according to published news sources.
Guajardo was appointed as Eagle Pass Police Chief on October 17, 2013 by former City Manager Gloria Barrientos after a statewide search for a Chief of Police among 10 candidates. Guajardo had been serving as Chief of Police since 2013. Prior to being appointed Police Chief, Guajardo served as a Patrol Officer and as a Detective with the Eagle Pass Police Department for 10 years. He also served in the U.S. Army before joining the Eagle Pass Police Department and worked for an electricity company upon completing his military service.
In 2015, Guajardo was awarded the City of Eagle Pass Director of the Year at the annual City of Eagle Pass Employees’ Awards.
Guajardo guided the development and construction of the new City of Eagle Pass Public Safety Headquarters at 489 South Monroe Street during his tenure as Police Chief . As a Detective, Guajardo investigated the City of Eagle Pass Gasoline Card fraud case that resulted in five persons being convicted in federal court.
Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo’s abrupt resignation surprised local citizens, city employees, and local, county, state, and federal law enforcement partners of the Eagle Pass Police Department.
Eagle Pass Assistant Police Chief Alejandro Guedea has been named Interim Police Chief by City Manager George Antuna. Guedea was appointed Assistant Police Chief on October 15, 2019 after having worked at the Eagle Pass Police Department since 1985 in several capacities. Guedea has 36 years working with the Eagle Pass Police Department, starting as a Patrol Officer and rising through the ranks up to Assistant Police Chief before being named Interim Police Chief. Prior to joining the Eagle Pass Police Department, Guedea worked as a Maverick County Sheriff’s Deputy.
The Eagle Pass City Council may hold an Emergency or Special Meeting in the immediate future to discuss the resignation of Police Chief Alberto Guajardo and the process of hiring a new Police Chief. Traditionally, the City Manager is responsible for hiring a new City Manager after a search process is established.
