Eagle Pass Independent School District Superintendent Samuel Mijares announced on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, that the local public school district is hosting free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics for students 12 years and older on Tuesday, August 17, at its four secondary school campuses, Eagle Pass Junior High and High School, Memorial Junior High School, and C. C. Winn High School. Each student must have written parental consent to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Mijares stated that local public officials met with local healthcare entities and physicians on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, and learned that there is a significant increase of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations in Maverick County due to the highly contagious Delta Variant, placing at risk the health and safety of Maverick County citizens—particularly those who are unvaccinated.
Mijares added that the Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday, August 10, and approved to take pro-active public health measures such as requiring face masks or coverings of all students and employees effective August 16 and offering free COVID-19 vaccine clinics for students 12 years or older at its four secondary campuses.
Mijares noted the Board chose to follow Local Health Authority Dr. Victoriano Valdez’s face mask mandate of all students and employees and Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo’s Declaration of a public health emergency issued on August 11 due to rise of the Delta Variant infections and hospitalizations within the community.
Mijares noted that “students are our most important resource” and we are going to do everything possible to protect their health and safety because if they get ill their learning is adversely affected.
On Tuesday, August 17th, the free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Eagle Pass High School and C.C. Winn High School, followed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Eagle Pass Junior High School and Memorial Junior High School. All students 12 years and older who are unvaccinated are eligible with written parental consent. The vaccine clinics are for secondary students only and limited to students enrolled at these four campuses.
All parents with children 12 years or older who are unvaccinated are encouraged to take advantage of these free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at the four secondary campuses of the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
