The 2020 Area Finalist Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks started their 2021 football season by romping the Crystal City Javelinas 37-14 in a non-district game on Friday, August 27, 2021 at the Crystal City ISD Javelina Football Stadium in Crystal City, Texas.
The thundering Mavericks under Head Coach Eric Villasenor jumped to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter and later added a second touchdown in the second quarter and the Javelinas tallied one touchdown of their own to give the Mavericks a 14-6 halftime lead.
The Mavericks exploded for 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a commanding 34-6 lead in the game and later added a field goal in the fourth quarter while limiting the Javelinas to only 8 points in the final quarter, earning the hard fought 37-14 victory over the fighting Javelinas.
Offensive leaders for the thundering Mavs against the Javelinas were quarterback Abraham Rodriguez who rushed for 141 yards on 11 carries, averaging 12.8 yards per carry, and scored one touchdown while passing for 15 yards on four completions out of 15 attempts and running back Jeremiah Robinson rushed for four touchdowns and 59 yards on 20 carries, including an 11 yard dash into the end zone, averaging 2.95 yards per carry. Rodriguez flashed his speed while Robinson showed his workhorse ethic to plow into the end zone.
Rodriguez and Robinson’s success was anchored by the stout Mavericks offensive line composed of tackles Erick Flores and Jorge Martinez, guards Hector Saldana and Jose Reyes, and center Jimmy Joe Lopez.
The Mavericks wrecking crew defense stifled the explosive Javelinas offense throughout the game limiting them to 14 points. The Mavericks defense is composed of linebackers Jaime Barrientos and Pablo Ramos, defensive tackles Adrian Morales and Juan Estrada, defensive ends Michael Hernandez and Victor Alonzo, safeties Almikar Ramos, Fernando Franco, and Juan Martinez, and cornerbacks Johathon Martinez and Alejandro Picazo.
The Mavericks start 1-0 in the season and will now face perennial arch-rival Uvalde Coyotes next Friday, September 3, 2021 at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Pass ISD Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium in a non-district contest designated as Parents Night.
