The Eagle Pass Winn High School Mavericks outlasted the Laredo Cigarroa High School Toros 14-7 in a hard fought football game to earn a victory in its 14-5A, Division I opener on Friday, September 24, 2021, at the Laredo Independent School District Shirley Field in Laredo, Texas, improving to 3-2 overall in the season and 1-0 in District.
Both teams appeared to be evenly matched during the game with each team having several opportunities to bust the game wide open, but each time teams’ defenses stifled the offenses.
The Mavericks opened the scoring early in the game on a sustained drive resulting on a 12 yard touchdown run by running back Arandu Pace and place kicker Almikar Ramos kicked the point after attempt through the uprights to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The stellar Mavericks’ Wrecking Crew defense led by linebackers Jaime Barrientos and Jose Pablo Ramos, defensive ends Michael Hernandez and Victor Alonzo, defensive tackles Adrian Morales and Juan Estrada, and defensive backs Almikar Ramos, Fernando Franco, Juan Martinez, Jonathon Martinez, and Alejandro Picazo stifled the potent Toros offense throughout the game, limiting them to only one score late in the fourth quarter on a seven yard scamper by Toros quarterback Ya-aqob Lozano with 11:51 minutes remaining in the game to tie the score at 7-7.
The Mavericks offense led by quarterback Abdiel Cardona, running backs Jeremiah Robinson and Arandu Pace, halfback Patrick Solis, wide receivers Eric Martinez, Alan Roli Jimenez, and Alan Vielma, and offensive linemen Erick Flores, Jorge Martinez, Hector Saldana, Jose Reyes, and Jimmy Joe Lopez marched up and down the field during most of the game, but turnovers and the stingy Toros defense kept the Mavericks from scoring on several occasions, especially in the first half.
Most importantly, with the game tied 7-7 in the fourth quarter, the Mavericks offense met the challenge and managed to engineer a touchdown drive culminating on a 32 yard aerial bomb from quarterback Abdiel Cardona to wide receiver Alan Roli Jimenez streaking towards the Toros end zone and place kicker Almikar Ramos extra point sailed through the middle of the goal posts to give the Mavericks a 14-7 lead with 2:48 minutes remaining in the game.
The Mavericks Wrecking Crew defense stopped the Toros offense last attempt to tie the game as time expired to preserve the key District win over a much improved Toros team.
The Mavericks had a total of 322 total offensive yards, including 265 rushing yards with running back Jeremiah Robinson accounting for 137 yards, quarterback Abdiel Cardona had 64 yards, and Arandu Pace had 63 yards and one touchdown, and quarterback Abdiel Cardona had 57 passing yards, including the game winning 32 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Alan Roli Jimenez.
The Mavericks will next play the San Antonio Southside Cardinals in another important District game on Friday, October 1, 2021, at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Roll Mavericks Roll!
