Former Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English Cantu Announces Candidacy for Maverick County Judge

Former Eagle Pass, Texas Mayor Ramsey English Cantu announced on Monday, November 22, 2021, at a large gathering of political supporters on the steps of the Eagle Pass Public Library in Eagle Pass that he had officially registered as a candidate for Maverick County Judge with the Democratic Party for the scheduled March 1, 2022 Texas Democratic Party Primary Election, challenging incumbent Maverick County Judge David R. Saucedo who earlier registered his candidacy for re-election on November 15, 2021.
Cantu stated that he had made the decision to seek the Maverick County Judge position after much thought and careful deliberation with his family, supporters, and friends.
Cantu added that he had officially registered his candidacy for County Judge with Maverick County Democratic Party Chairperson Juanita V. Martinez earlier that day, November 22, at the Maverick County Democratic Party Headquarters, located at 1299 Main Street, Suite A, in Eagle Pass.
Cantu served 14 years as a City Councilman and Mayor of the City of Eagle Pass. He was first elected as a City Councilman in 2006 and re-elected in 2008. He was elected as Mayor in 2010 and twice re-elected before resigning in 2019 to seek the Texas State Representative District 74 post in the March 2020 Texas Democratic Party Primary Election, which he was unsuccessful in this bid.
Cantu thanked the over 200 supporters present at his candidate announcement at the Eagle Pass Public Library during the Thanksgiving holidays. Cantu stated the large gathering of supporters signifies the event as a “Celebration of Change” by Maverick County voters. Cantu added that he seeks to bring change to Maverick County government with transparency and respect for all citizens.
Cantu cited the public projects that the City of Eagle Pass developed during his leadership as Mayor, including the Patsy Winn Sports Complex, the Eagle Pass Public Safety Headquarters (Fire Department and Police Department), the DeBona Park, the Bluebonnet Skate Park, City Park, the Dorothy Lewis Park, the Cruz Antonio Munoz Gymnasium, over 100 miles of public streets paved, and fiscal responsibility and a double AA Credit Rating for the City of Eagle Pass. Cantu added his extensive leadership experience with the City of Eagle Pass and local and regional non-profit organizations and boards has motivated him to represent the over 60,000 citizens of Maverick County.
Cantu is currently working as the Regional Political Director of Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D-19).
The Texas Democratic Party Primary Election is on March 1, 2022 and the Texas General Election is on November 8, 2022.
