Representative Eddie Morales Announces For Re-Election
Eagle Pass, TX— Today, Representative Eddie Morales Jr. announced he is running for re-election to continue representing House District 74. Rep. Morales is in his first term as a freshman Representative but has already proven he is able to achieve results for his district.
This session, Rep. Morales authored bills that brought property tax relief by increasing the homestead exemption, awarded a thirteenth check to retired teachers, expanded rural broadband access, secured funding for a new customs station Presidio to increase trade, expanded access to treatments for PTSD to support our veterans, and ensured our public schools secured supplemental funds amid the pandemic. He worked on issues important to House District 74 like adding the dark skies initiative to the list of uses for hotel occupancy taxes in West Texas and trying to prevent wind farms from being built in the flight paths for Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio.
As the Representative for eight of the fourteen border counties, Rep. Morales championed the $2 billion dollars in state funds to be invested into border security. He was a joint author of the border security bill and the only Democrat to support it in the Texas House. In addition, Rep. Morales protected landowner rights by joint-authoring an amendment to prohibit the state from using eminent domain in order to construct a border barrier, protecting private property owners who wish to not have a border barrier across their land, and ensuring participation is voluntary.
Representative Morales voted in favor of House Bill 1927, otherwise known as the “Permit-less Carry Act.” Representative Morales said, “House Bill 1927 ensures that the residents of House District 74 will not be penalized for exercising their Second Amendment rights.”
“I have been committed to the principles of bipartisanship and in doing so, we have been able to bring results to House District 74. The work, however, is not finished. We need to continue to work hard in building up our communities’ infrastructure, expanding healthcare coverage, and continue making strides in improving access to mental health services.”
Rep. Morales, along with securing our border, has been focused on ensuring that individuals in our district have access to high-quality mental health services. In the most recent special session, Rep. Morales sought $86 million for a comprehensive behavioral health center, and as a result, the Permian Basin will receive $40 million dollars for 100 inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care beds for adults and adolescents, along with a crisis stabilization unit. He is also working to increase trade and economic opportunity by securing both federal funding for a new customs station in Presidio and statutory authority for Maverick County hotel taxes to make improvements to the Maverick County Airport.
“I have remained committed to representing the values of our district and with your continued support, seek to continue doing so in the next 88th Legislative Session.” Rep. Morales said, “Our district is looking for results – and in order to achieve those results, it is essential to stay true to the principles of bipartisanship. It would be my honor to continue serving the constituents of House District 74 by building bipartisan coalitions to deliver results for all.”
