Eagle Pass City Manager George Antuna announced on Thursday, June 16, 2022 that three proposed new hotels are being considered to be built in the immediate future to meet the rapid growth and demand in the community.
Antuna stated that two proposed hotels are planned to be built on U.S. Highway 277 South near the newly-opened City of Eagle Pass Patsy Winn Sports Complex at the intersection of U.S. Highway 277 South (Main Street) and U.S. Highway 57 South while a third hotel is planned near downtown Eagle Pass.
Antuna added that current hotel occupancy rates are approximately 95 percent due to the growing international trade, tourism, sports tournaments, and state and federal agencies supporting the immigration surge of migrants on the United States-Mexico border such as U.S. Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Texas National Guard, and other business visitors.
Antuna noted that the City of Eagle Pass Economic Development Director Arturo Marquez and City Planning Director Placido Madera are working with the hotel developers and investors in expediting their proposed permits and plans.
“There is a great need for additional hotel and hospitality rooms in Eagle Pass due to unprecedented growth being experienced by our community,” Antuna said.
The record immigration surge facing the United States-Mexico border has caused state and federal agencies to add thousands of personnel along the southern border, including Eagle Pass.
Demand for sports tourism and tournaments at the newly opened City of Eagle Pass Patsy Winn Sports Complex has also increased the need for hotel rooms from out of town and out of state teams and families wishing to participate. Many teams are having to find rooms in Del Rio, Uvalde, Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, and other cities due to the lack of availability of hotels in Eagle Pass. Some tournaments have had to be cancelled or postponed due to lack of hotel rooms.
International trade has blossomed at the Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico Port of Entry as well as the development of manufacturing plants in northern Coahuila, creating a high demand for hotel rooms in Eagle Pass.
Antuna stated the City of Eagle Pass is working with all businesses and investors seeking to open new businesses in the community.
