City of Eagle Pass Economic Development Department Director Arturo Marquez stated City and Maverick County officials are scheduled to announce a third major new hotel development project at a press conference to be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at 12 Noon at City Council Chambers, located at 100 South Monroe Street, in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Marquez stated that both the Eagle Pass City Council and Maverick County Commissioners Court have formally approved Chapter 380/381 Tax Abatement Agreements with hotel developers earlier this month to develop and construct a new major hotel development project in the historic Fort Duncan Park area in downtown Eagle Pass.
The proposed new hotel development project is a multi-million dollar investment in the community and will be constructed north of the Fort Duncan historic ruins and west of the historic Maverick County Memorial Hospital building on an approximately five acre tract of property.
The new proposed hotel project will have a scenic view of the Rio Grande and the United States-Mexico border on the grounds of the historic Fort Duncan along the U.S.-Mexico border fence.
The new hotel will be adjacent to the City of Eagle Pass Municipal Golf Course and between the two City of Eagle Pass International Bridges Nos. 1 and 2.
Marquez added that the new hotel development project will be a major economic development booster to the City of Eagle Pass as well as to the downtown area.
Marquez noted this new hotel development project to be announced on December 6, 2022 is the third new hotel project approved for Chapter 380/381 Tax Abatement Agreements by the Eagle Pass City Council and Maverick County Commissioners Court in 2022.
In addition to these three new hotel development projects, Marquez noted that local real estate and hotel developers are renovating the historic Hesles Motel on Madison Avenue in downtown Eagle Pass.
With the City of Eagle Pass and Maverick County experiencing rapid growth, a shortage of hotel rooms has surfaced in the community with local existing hotels reporting 90-95% occupancy rates and daily room rates averaging between $200-$350. Often visitors have to rent hotel rooms in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico and other nearby cities such as Del Rio, Uvalde, Carrizo Springs, and Crystal City due to the shortage of hotel rooms.
Local hotels are enjoying their best year in 2022 as the current immigration surge on the U.S.-Mexico border has caused thousands of Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Officers, Texas Army National Guard members, federal law enforcement officers, tourists, and business visitors have had to rent hotel rooms within the community.
