The Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) hosted Women’s Health Awareness Month during January 2023 and capped it off with a cervical cancer awareness event titled “Tarde De Loteria” on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Eagle Pass International Center for Trade in Eagle Pass, Texas, attended by over 250 persons and 10 local healthcare providers and organizations, announced Alma Martinez, Chief Executive Officer at MCHD.
MCHD also designated January 2023 as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in the community.
Despite a bitter cold front that hit Eagle Pass on January 31, the MCHD’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Services “Tarde De Loteria” cervical cancer awareness event was a great success as local citizens, patients, and healthcare providers came together to learn about cervical cancer and the services offered at the MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program.
MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services Director Janet Palacios stated the purpose of the “Tarde De Loteria” was to educate and inform the local community about the valuable healthcare services available at the Maverick County Hospital District and to raise awareness of cervical cancer.
Guests enjoyed an evening of Mexican Loteria games with prizes awarded to the winners of each game donated by local businesses, music, dance, refreshments and dinner.
Several guest speakers spoke about the importance to take advantage of the services available at the MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program to prevent cancer among women in these 10 counties.
Palacios stated that the MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program offers women access to free breast and cervical screening services in 10 counties who are over 18 years of age, have no health insurance, and whose income is under 200% of the federal poverty level. Additional services available include mammograms, Pap smears, breast and cervical diagnostics, and assistance with applying for Medicaid for breast and cervical cancer services.
The 10 counties served by the MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program include Maverick, Dimmit, Zavala, Uvalde, Kinney, Edwards, Medina, Real, Val Verde, and Tom Green.
The MCHD Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program is located at 3406 Bob Rogers Drive, Suite 250, Eagle Pass, Texas. For more information, please contact them at (830) 757-4954.
