Eagle Pass Approves Garbage Fee Exemption for Seniors and Disabled Veterans

The Eagle Pass City Council approved a resolution during its September 1, 2026 regular monthly meeting granting an exemption from monthly residential garbage and rubbish collection fees for eligible senior citizens and disabled veterans.

The exemption will apply to individuals who are 65 years of age or older and disabled veterans whose homestead residences are located within the Eagle Pass city limits, as indicated on the city’s tax rolls.

The exemption will remain in effect throughout the City of Eagle Pass 2026-2027 fiscal year, beginning October 1, 2026, and ending September 30, 2027.

Under the city’s current solid waste ordinance, individual residences within the city limits are charged a monthly garbage collection fee of $20 through their Eagle Pass Water Works System bill.

The exemption could therefore save each qualifying household approximately $240 during the fiscal year.

The assistance can be particularly meaningful for senior citizens living on Social Security, retirement income or other fixed monthly resources. Eliminating the garbage fee provides modest but direct relief at a time when many older residents face increasing expenses for food, utilities, housing and prescription medications.

The resolution also recognizes the service and sacrifices of disabled veterans by relieving qualifying households of the monthly collection charge.

Eligible residents may be required to have their senior citizen or disabled veteran homestead exemption reflected through the Maverick County Appraisal District and provide the approved information to the Eagle Pass Water Works System for implementation.
