Eagle Pass Camino Real International Bridge Celebrates 27th Anniversary Amid Expansion to 12 Lanes Planned

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Thursday, September 24, 1999 marks the 27th anniversary of the opening of the Camino Real International Bridge, a vital gateway connecting Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and one of the region’s most important economic and cultural links.
The bridge officially opened in September 24, 1999 and has since served as a symbol of friendship, commerce and cooperation between the United States and Mexico. During that time, it has facilitated millions of vehicle crossings while supporting international trade, tourism and generations of families with connections on both sides of the border.
Two years ago, local and regional leaders celebrated the bridge’s 25th anniversary during a commemorative ceremony at the new Eagle Pass International Bridge System administration building. The event brought together current and former city officials, including individuals who participated in the planning and development of the project during the 1990s.
Twenty-seven years later, Eagle Pass finds itself at a critical crossroads involving the future of commercial traffic and international trade.
The City is preparing to use a Presidential Permit granted in June 2025 to expand the existing six-lane Camino Real International Bridge into a 12-lane facility.
The project includes the construction of another six-lane span alongside the existing bridge.
Such an expansion was likely beyond what many local leaders imagined when the bridge opened more than a quarter-century ago.
Today, however, the project is considered essential as Eagle Pass attempts to establish itself as a leading international trade corridor under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Eagle Pass officials recently traveled to Washington, D.C., where they strongly advocated for the Camino Real International Bridge expansion and sought federal support for the project. The visit demonstrated the City’s determination to move the expansion forward and strengthen relationships with federal leaders and agencies involved in border infrastructure and international commerce.
Mayor Aaron Valdez has repeatedly identified the expansion as one of his administration’s leading priorities. Based on his previous public statements, partnering with a private project that could divert commercial traffic and cause Eagle Pass to lose a substantial portion of its annual bridge revenue is not an option the City is willing to consider.
“The Camino Real International Bridge has been part of Eagle Pass’s progress for 27 years, connecting our families, businesses and economies with Piedras Negras. We now have an opportunity to build upon that legacy by expanding the bridge from six to 12 lanes. This project is about preparing for future trade, protecting an important source of public revenue and ensuring that Eagle Pass remains in control of its economic future. I am committed to working with our state and federal partners to move this expansion forward for our community,” Mayor Aaron Valdez said.
The bridge is currently the only commercial vehicle port of entry in Eagle Pass and Maverick County. Keeping commercial traffic at the publicly owned crossing is especially important because bridge toll collections represent a major source of revenue for the City’s annual budget.
The Camino Real International Bridge connects with Mexico’s Federal Highway 57, which provides access to major industrial centers including Monterrey and Mexico City. On the Texas side, U.S. Highway 57 offers a direct route toward San Antonio and other major markets.
The proposed expansion also comes as the controversial privately developed Puerto Verde Global Trade Bridge Project continues trying to move forward. Puerto Verde is planned as a commercial vehicle only crossing that could compete directly for freight traffic currently processed through the City-owned Camino Real International Bridge.
City leaders have expressed opposition to the competing project and previously declined to enter into a partnership with Puerto Verde. Their position reflects concerns over the possible loss of commercial traffic and toll revenue from Bridge II.
Maverick County originally obtained the Presidential Permit under which the Puerto Verde project is being developed. The County later considered taking a controlling interest in the project, although its future participation remains uncertain.
That uncertainty comes as Maverick County struggles with serious financial challenges and attempts to balance its budget following years of decisions by previous administrations that left the current government with limited resources, reduced financial flexibility and several unresolved obligations.
While County leaders remain occupied with maintaining basic government operations, balancing expenditures and addressing previous financial commitments, the future of one of the largest proposed infrastructure projects in the region remains unsettled.
The decisions made by the City and County could determine where commercial traffic travels, which public entity receives future toll revenues and how Eagle Pass and Maverick County participate in the continued growth of international commerce.
Beyond its economic importance, the Camino Real International Bridge remains a symbol of unity between two sister cities that share geography, history, family connections and cultural traditions. Workers, students, shoppers and families cross the bridge daily, maintaining a relationship that existed long before the structure was built.
As the bridge reaches its 27th anniversary, its future may be more important than at any other time in its history. The proposed expansion represents an opportunity to protect the City’s commercial traffic, strengthen its largest revenue-generating asset and prepare the Port of Eagle Pass for decades of continued growth.
The bridge that opened with six lanes in 1999 could soon become a 12-lane international gateway, placing Eagle Pass at the center of an important decision over the future of cross-border commerce in the region.
