Eagle Pass Fire Department Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Through Specialized Training

The Eagle Pass Fire Department continued its commitment to training and emergency preparedness this week as local first responders participated in specialized instruction focused on the medical response to bombing incidents and other large-scale emergencies.
The two-day Medical Preparedness and Response to Bombing Incidents course, identified as MGT-348/PER-233, was held September 1 and 2, 2026 in Eagle Pass. The training totaled 16 hours and was conducted as part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA-supported program.
Local fire personnel participated in the training at the City of Eagle Pass Community Emergency Operations Center, continuing the department’s efforts to ensure firefighters and emergency medical personnel remain prepared for complex incidents that could require a coordinated community response.
The specialized course is delivered through the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, TEEX, in partnership with New Mexico Tech’s Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center.
It is designed for firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, hospital personnel, emergency managers and other professionals who could become involved in responding to an explosive incident.
Training covers the characteristics of explosives, pre-attack indicators, blast injuries, triage considerations, scene safety, pre- and post-detonation response, command considerations and the coordination of local, state and federal resources.
Participants also examine lessons learned from actual incidents, including the Boston Marathon and London transit bombings.
The importance of continued training for firefighters extends well beyond traditional fire suppression. Fire department personnel are frequently among the first responders arriving at medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, hazardous-material incidents and other situations where quick decisions and proper coordination can save lives.
Specialized programs such as this allow personnel to train for emergencies that may be uncommon but could have devastating consequences if they occur.
Preparing beforehand helps responders recognize dangers, establish priorities, properly triage victims and coordinate available resources while protecting themselves and the public.
Continued education and training are also specifically identified as part of the Eagle Pass Fire Department’s mission to prevent and minimize the loss of life and property while providing fire suppression and emergency medical services to the community.
While the hope is that firefighters never have to put some of these specialized skills into practice, maintaining that level of preparedness ensures Eagle Pass first responders are better equipped to protect the community when every second counts.
