Labor Day to be Observed Monday, September 7

Residents of Eagle Pass, Maverick County and communities across the nation will join in observing Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2026, a federal holiday dedicated to recognizing the contributions and achievements of American workers.

Observed each year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day celebrates the men and women whose work has helped build the nation, strengthen communities and support generations of American families.

The holiday traces its roots to the American labor movement of the late 19th century, when workers increasingly advocated for better working conditions and greater recognition of their contributions. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882.

Labor Day officially became a federal holiday in 1894 when Congress passed legislation recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day and President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

Here in Eagle Pass and Maverick County, the holiday also provides an opportunity to recognize the thousands of local residents who get up every day and go to work to provide for their families and keep the community moving forward.

From educators, healthcare professionals and first responders to law enforcement officers, construction crews, ranchers, retail employees, restaurant workers, truck drivers, government employees, small business owners and those working along the international border and in the region’s trade industry, each plays a role in the economic and social fabric of the community.

Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, federal government offices will generally be closed Monday.

Many other government offices, financial institutions and businesses may also observe the holiday or operate under modified schedules.

For many Americans, Labor Day weekend represents the unofficial end of summer and an opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends.
