Maverick County Commissioners Court September 9 Meeting to Address Budget, Tax Rate and Public Safety

The Maverick County Commissioners Court will hold a regular meeting today, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom at the Maverick County Courthouse, located at 500 Quarry Street in Eagle Pass.

The 45-item agenda includes numerous matters of importance involving the county’s proposed tax rate, upcoming budget, public safety funding, employee health insurance, intergovernmental agreements and unresolved property concerns.

Commissioners are scheduled to receive the county’s calculated tax rates, including the No-New-Revenue Tax Rate and Voter-Approval Tax Rate. The Court will then consider placing a proposal on a future agenda to adopt a property tax rate of $0.366060 per $100 in taxable value.

According to the agenda, the proposed rate would be higher than the No-New-Revenue Tax Rate. If approved for consideration, the county would publish the required notice and hold a public hearing on September 23 at 5 p.m.

Commissioner Olga Ramos also requested a discussion regarding the county’s proposed 2026–2027 budget.

The discussion could provide additional information about county revenues, departmental funding and any proposed spending reductions or increases.

Another significant item involves a request to provide approximately $900,000 in interim funding for Operation Lone Star. The money would cover an estimated three months of employee salaries while the county awaits final approval of its 2026–2027 grant from the Governor’s Office.

The Court will also review the status of a payment agreement with Jim Wells County. Commissioners could examine the agreement’s terms, payment schedule, execution date, signatures and current payment status. A separate item calls for possible action to rescind a Memorandum of Agreement between Jim Wells County and Maverick County dated August 12, 2026.

Public safety matters include the possible acceptance of $214,804 in grant funding for a catalytic-converter theft-prevention program through the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office. The Court will also consider salary-related actions for detention and investigative personnel.

Commissioners are expected to discuss Imagine 360 medical insurance coverage for county employees, amendments to the current fiscal-year budget and the ratification of time-sensitive payments previously released by the county treasurer and auditor.

Additional discussions will involve the Maverick County International Airport Board, a finalized memorandum of understanding between EPISD and Maverick County, the legal status of the Radar Base homes and unresolved matters involving Chaparral Crescent and Esquenazi Drive.
Fire and EMS matters are listed for discussion in executive session.

Commissioners may meet privately with legal counsel and discuss economic-development negotiations as permitted under state law. Any final action must be taken after the Court returns to open session.

The public may attend the meeting. Residents wishing to speak during public comment must complete and submit a Commissioners Court Public Participation Form to the county judge’s court coordinator before the meeting begins. Each speaker will be limited to three minutes.
