The Maverick County Hospital District Board of Trustees approved an approximately $112 million balanced budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year Monday, August 31, 2026, while maintaining its property tax rate at $0.121 per $100 of taxable valuation.
MCHD Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla presented the proposed spending plan to trustees, outlining anticipated revenues, expenditures and the District’s financial outlook as it begins another fiscal year providing healthcare services and assistance programs throughout Maverick County.
Following the presentation and discussion, trustees approved the approximately $112 million budget.
The Board also approved a property tax rate of $0.121 per $100 valuation, the same rate reflected for 2025 in the District’s public tax notice.
Although the rate remains unchanged, homeowners could see a slight increase in their tax bills because of changes in taxable property values.
According to MCHD’s public tax notice, the average homestead taxable value increased from $172,673 in 2025 to $174,215 in 2026, an increase of 0.89 percent.
At the $0.121 tax rate, taxes on the average homestead are projected to increase from $208.93 to $210.80, a difference of $1.87, or approximately 0.90 percent.
The District expects its total property tax levy to increase from approximately $5.97 million to $6.28 million, an increase of $307,551, or 5.15 percent, as the overall taxable property base grows.
The notice also shows MCHD’s no-new-revenue tax rate at $0.113827 per $100 valuation and its voter-approval tax rate at $0.155474. Because the $0.121 rate remains below the voter-approval threshold, MCHD is not required to hold an election for voters to approve or reject the rate.
MCHD also reported spending approximately $3.1 million on indigent healthcare compensation expenditures from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.
The District estimates those expenditures will increase by approximately $1.42 million during the current tax year.
The new budget supports MCHD’s medical operations, employees, facilities, specialty care and public healthcare programs serving Maverick County residents.
Those programs include the Medical Financial Assistance Program, Breast and Cervical Cancer Services, Ryan White HIV services, colorectal cancer screening and other healthcare assistance initiatives.
MCHD also continues providing and expanding access to specialty services including general surgery, orthopedics and sports medicine, urology, podiatry, oncology and hematology, endocrinology, family practice and behavioral health.Created in 1965, the Maverick County Hospital District is charged with improving healthcare access and providing medical assistance to qualifying residents.
Approval of the budget and tax rate provides the District with its financial framework for the coming fiscal year while keeping the property tax rate unchanged at 12.1 cents per $100 valuation.
