Maverick County Judge Seeks Community Support for “Operation Love Your Lake”

Maverick County Commissioners Court is seeking to launch a community initiative aimed at beautifying, restoring and revitalizing Maverick County Lake with assistance from local businesses and organizations.

The proposed effort, called “Operation Love Your Lake,” is scheduled for consideration by Maverick County Commissioners Court during its special meeting Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Under Agenda Item 4, commissioners will consider authorizing Interim County Judge Pablo Garcia, Jr. to draft letters to local businesses and organizations requesting support for the beautification, restoration and revitalization of Maverick County Lake.

The initiative could bring county government, businesses, civic organizations and community members together to help improve one of Maverick County’s longtime public recreational areas.

The effort comes as the lake itself faces a significant challenge. Maverick County Lake is currently drying up after water has not been replenished or pumped into the lake for several years.

Restoring the area therefore could involve more than landscaping and general beautification as county officials consider the future condition of the lake and surrounding recreational grounds.

A second item on Wednesday’s agenda could provide an early contribution to the effort.

Commissioners will consider accepting a donation from the Elm Creek Greenbelt Advocacy Group consisting of six trees to be planted at Maverick County Lake.

The two agenda items come as Maverick County prepares to enter a financially challenging fiscal year.
The proposed FY 2026-2027 General Fund budget includes approximately $28 million in expenditures, while county officials have worked to reduce personnel and operating expenses across several departments.

Against that financial backdrop, seeking assistance from businesses and community organizations could provide another avenue for improving the lake without relying solely on county government funding.

However, with the lake continuing to lose water, the larger revitalization effort may ultimately depend not only on beautifying its surroundings but also on addressing how water can once again be replenished and maintained at Maverick County Lake.
