Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center Launches GED Program for Inmates

The Maverick County Tom Bowles Detention Center is launching a GED program for eight inmates seeking to continue their education and earn a high school equivalency diploma.
Maverick County Sheriff’s Department Chief of Deputies Roberto De Leon announced that the program is being established in collaboration with Southwest Texas College as part of the detention center’s rehabilitation efforts.
De Leon said education can provide inmates with knowledge, confidence and practical skills that may help them make better decisions, accept responsibility for their futures and prepare for a successful return to their families and the community.
The program is also intended to help participants become more productive, improve their ability to support their loved ones and break cycles that could otherwise affect future generations.
By expanding educational and rehabilitation opportunities inside the detention center, officials hope to reduce the likelihood that participants will return to criminal activity after their release. Each step toward education, accountability and personal growth can contribute to safer families and communities throughout Maverick County.
De Leon thanked Major Guerra, Captain Ramos and the detention center staff members who worked to make the program possible.
He said their commitment demonstrates that the work conducted inside the county detention center extends beyond maintaining security and includes helping individuals prepare for a better future.
“One GED. One opportunity. One life changed at a time,” De Leon said.
The program will initially serve several inmates who have committed themselves to completing the educational requirements necessary to obtain their GED diplomas.
