Maverick County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 to Begin Accepting Water Orders October 1

The Maverick County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 will begin accepting water orders on October 1, 2026, bringing some relief to customers who have spent almost four years without any type of water allocation due to a severe drought.

According to a notice issued by Interim General Manager Randal Edwards, the amount of advance notice required for an order will depend on the community being served.

Water users in the Quemado area must submit their orders at least one day in advance.

Customers in the Central area must provide two days’ notice, while those in the El Indio area must place their orders three days before the requested delivery.

District officials said the timelines are intended to help ensure water reaches agricultural fields as scheduled while supporting smoother operations throughout the district.

The notice establishes two rates. Customers who currently have water remaining in their accounts will be charged $4 per acre-foot, while customers with no water in their accounts will pay $15 per acre-foot.
Customers with water credited to their accounts must use their remaining balances before purchasing additional water.

New purchases will only be allowed after an account has reached zero, and purchases will be restricted to the customer’s actual water usage.

The district also stated that water transfers between customers will not be permitted.

Officials said the restriction is intended to maintain fairness and consistency among water users.

The announcement comes after district customers have spent long periods without any type of water allocation, creating significant difficulties for farmers and other agricultural users who depend on the district’s irrigation system.

Customers who are uncertain about the amount of water remaining in their accounts are encouraged to contact the district directly.
