EAGLE PASS — A male subject was taken into custody Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026 after surveillance video showed him outside Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School carrying what initially appeared to be a rifle, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement before students and staff arrived for the school day.
According to a September 29 media release from the Eagle Pass Police Department, school personnel reviewing surveillance footage observed a male wearing a red hooded sweatshirt in front of the school at approximately 5:49 a.m. The individual appeared to be carrying a rifle and was later seen leaving the area.
School administrators immediately contacted law enforcement.
Eagle Pass police officers responded and secured the school and surrounding area before the arrival of students and staff.
Officers then began canvassing the nearby neighborhood and speaking with residents and other members of the community.
Police said information gathered during the investigation and assistance from community members allowed officers to identify the individual.
Working with the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office and Eagle Pass Independent School District Police Department, officers later located the subject at a residence within Maverick County.
The individual was taken into custody without incident and the weapon was recovered. Upon further inspection, authorities determined that what had appeared to be a rifle was actually an air rifle, commonly referred to as a BB gun.
The subject was transported to the Eagle Pass Police Department for further investigation and processing. Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
The Eagle Pass Police Department commended the administration and staff at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School for their vigilance and immediate response, saying their actions demonstrated the importance of remaining alert and prioritizing the safety of students and staff.
Police also thanked Eagle Pass residents who assisted officers during the investigation and credited cooperation among the community, EPPD, Maverick County Sheriff’s Office and EPISD Police Department with helping bring the situation to a safe resolution.
Authorities have not released the identity of the individual or announced whether charges will be filed as the investigation continues.
