Sul Ross State University International marked a historic milestone Wednesday, September 16, 2026 as university and community leaders welcomed the university’s first-ever freshman class during a special convocation ceremony in Eagle Pass, Texas.
The inaugural class represents the beginning of a new era for Sul Ross State University International as the institution transitions from offering two-year degree completion programs to providing four-year degree programs that students can begin immediately after graduating from high school.
Carlos Hernandez, Ed.D., president of Sul Ross State University, welcomed students, faculty members, families and community representatives in attendance for the historic occasion.
The convocation celebrated the students who will forever be recognized as the founding freshman class of Sul Ross State University International.
City of Eagle Pass, Public Affairs and Events Director Aide Castaño presented a proclamation officially recognizing September 16, 2026, as Founding Freshman Day in Eagle Pass.
The proclamation honored the inaugural students and recognized the importance of expanding access to higher education for residents of Eagle Pass, Maverick County and the surrounding region.
For many years, Sul Ross State University International provided upper-level undergraduate and graduate programs for students who had already completed their first two years of college. The institution’s transition into a four-year university creates a pathway for local students to pursue a complete bachelor’s degree closer to home.
The expansion could also help reduce the financial and personal challenges faced by students who previously had to leave the community to attend a four-year institution.
Wednesday’s convocation symbolized more than the beginning of another academic year. It represented the start of a new chapter in the history of higher education in Eagle Pass and the region.
The members of the inaugural freshman class now hold a special place in that history. Their academic journeys will help establish traditions and create a foundation for future generations of Sul Ross State University International students.
City and university representatives congratulated the founding freshmen and encouraged them to embrace the opportunities and responsibilities that come with being part of the institution’s first four-year class.
The celebration concluded with a message of optimism for the students and the university as Sul Ross State University International continues expanding its educational role within the Eagle Pass community.
