The Maverick County Hospital District (MCHD) is among the rural healthcare providers in Texas selected to receive federal funding aimed at expanding access to medical services, strengthening the healthcare workforce and improving medical infrastructure.
The District was awarded a total of $1,773,293 through two grant initiatives under the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission through the state’s Rural Texas Strong initiative.
The funding comes as part of approximately $87 million in rural healthcare grants announced by Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to support healthcare improvements in communities across the state.
Of the total funding designated for MCHD, $725,000 was awarded through The Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team initiative. The program is designed to help rural healthcare providers recruit, train and retain physicians and other medical professionals, addressing longstanding workforce shortages in smaller communities.
The District was also awarded $1,048,293 through the Infrastructure and Capital Investments for Rural Texas initiative, which supports improvements to healthcare facilities, medical equipment and infrastructure necessary to deliver quality medical services.
Maverick County Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla welcomed the funding as an opportunity to strengthen healthcare services and address the growing medical needs of Maverick County residents.
“These grants represent an important opportunity for the Maverick County Hospital District to continue strengthening healthcare services for our community. The additional funding will help us address critical needs, support the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals, and invest in infrastructure that will benefit our residents for years to come,” Bonilla said.
The Maverick County Hospital District Board of Directors is composed of President Adolfo Olivares, Vice-President Stephany Valdez, Secretary-Treasurer Rebecca Robinson, Board Members Dr. Cruz Alberto Bernal, and Dr. David Chisum.
The funding represents another opportunity for the Hospital District to continue improving access to medical care, including its ongoing efforts to provide urgent care services to residents who might otherwise face limited healthcare options.
The two grants are intended to help rural healthcare institutions address challenges associated with recruiting medical professionals, maintaining modern facilities and providing accessible services to underserved populations.
While the funding has been announced, the release and expenditure of the grant money remain subject to the completion of required agreements and applicable state and federal guidelines.
The financial assistance could provide MCHD with additional resources to strengthen its healthcare operations and support future improvements benefiting residents throughout Maverick County.
