Residents gathered at Maverick County Lake on Saturday, October 3, 2026 for the third annual breast cancer walkathon organized by Maverick County Constable Precinct 1 Cecilia “Cecy” Maldonado.
The event brought the community together to raise awareness and show support for people affected by breast cancer. An estimated 300 persons of all ages participated in the walkathon.
Constable Cecy Maldonado thanked the volunteers and everyone who participated, saying their support helped make the walkathon a great success.
The event also highlighted the importance of awareness and early detection in Maverick County.
The most recent available cancer data show an estimated 30 new breast cancer cases locally each year. About 38 percent of cases are diagnosed at a late stage, compared with 33.1 percent statewide, according to National Cancer Institute data reported through State Cancer Profiles.
Women in Maverick County have access to Breast and Cervical Cancer Services, known as BCCS, through both the Maverick County Hospital District and United Medical Centers. The programs help eligible women access screenings, including mammograms, as well as diagnostic services and guidance through follow-up care. For patients who are diagnosed and lack insurance coverage for treatment, program staff can also help determine eligibility for Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer.
The walkathon’s message was one of solidarity and hope, reminding residents that awareness, screening and access to care can make a meaningful difference for individuals and families facing breast cancer.
