The Eagle Pass Business Journal launched “Eagle Pass Live. Our Students. Nuestras Historias.” on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a new student-produced program that provides young people an opportunity to report campus news, activities, opinions, conduct interviews, and share their stories with the community.
The “Eagle Pass Live. Our Students. Nuestras Historias,” program debuted on the Eagle Pass Business Journal Facebook page.
Calderon announced that subsequent broadcasts would take place every two weeks.
Eagle Pass High School junior William Taylor hosted the first episode, joined by students Maria Angela Saldana and Ximena Gonzalez for discussions about student organizations, campus activities and opportunities in journalism.
Eagle Pass Business Journal Publisher Ricardo E. Calderon introduced the inaugural broadcast and welcomed the students to the platform.
Calderon brings more than 45 years of journalism experience, including 34 years publishing the Eagle Pass Business Journal, to his role as a mentor providing publishing opportunities for aspiring student journalists.
“This show is totally produced and reported by local high school students,” Calderon said during his introduction.
“On behalf of the Eagle Pass Business Journal, we’re very honored and privileged to be able to sponsor this show with our local high school students,” he added before turning the broadcast over to Taylor.
The first episode featured a rundown of upcoming campus events and news, including homecoming activities and a college fair, along with recognition of the Mighty Eagle Band’s second-place finish at a recent marching competition involving six high schools in San Antonio, Texas.
“Thank you for joining us for our very first broadcast,” Taylor said as he welcomed viewers.
Taylor guided the interviews, asking students about their organizations, the experiences that inspired their involvement and ways other students could participate.
Maria Angela Saldana, a junior student, discussed the Model United Nations Club and her efforts to bring that experience to Eagle Pass High School. She explained that her involvement began in seventh grade, when a teacher encouraged her to participate in a conference.
“Model United Nations is an educational simulation in which students represent countries and discuss international issues as delegates,” said Saldana.
“Participants research their assigned nations, deliver speeches, debate proposals and work together on resolutions, developing skills in diplomacy, public speaking and critical thinking,” added Saldana.
Saldana credited teachers and counselors with helping her prepare for conferences. She also described how a summer program helped her learn ways to introduce the organization to other students.
“It definitely showed me how to teach Model UN and how to encourage other students to join in as well,” Saldana said.
Ximena Gonzalez, a senior and president of the Eagle Pass High School Press Club, discussed plans for a digital newsletter at school featuring photography and videography while retaining elements of a traditional newspaper. She emphasized the importance of covering a wider range of students and campus experiences.
“We’ll be able to still incorporate some elements of the newspaper onto the newsletter,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez also described how Calderon’s genuine support and willingness to publish student articles in the Eagle Pass Business Journal helped her explore journalism as a possible career.
Gonzalez identified Isaac Zamora , William Taylor, and herself as Press Club members whom published articles in the Eagle Pass Business Journal.
The original six high school students participating in the inaugural show on October 13 included William Taylor, Maria Angela Saldana, Ximena Gonzalez, Michael Perales, Sophia Guerra, and Madison De Los Santos.
“Mr. Calderon was very willing to give us an opportunity to write articles for publication in the Eagle Pass Business Journal and encouraged us to write and produce this student show,” Gonzalez said.
The broadcast included an invitation for students to attend Press Club meetings, follow the Eagle Pass High School newspaper Instagram account and contribute articles, columns or stories.
Through Calderon’s sponsorship and mentorship, the debut of Eagle Pass Live is expanding opportunities for local students to gain practical journalism experience and share campus life with the community while challenging them to be creative and innovative.
