Eagle Pass Independent School District Spirit Ambassadors Pedro Rodrigues Barboza and Alayza Hidalgo helped promote Down Syndrome Awareness Month by sharing a poster encouraging unity and inclusion and distributing awareness bracelets.
Observed each October, Down Syndrome Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness and celebrate people with Down syndrome. It also encourages communities to recognize their contributions and support opportunities for everyone to be included.
The month helps people look beyond a diagnosis and recognize each person’s abilities, interests and goals. It provides an opportunity to challenge misconceptions, encourage understanding and promote inclusion in schools, workplaces and community activities.
For people with Down syndrome and their families, that support helps build a community where everyone is respected and has opportunities to participate.
Through their poster and bracelets, Rodrigues Barboza and Hidalgo shared a message of acceptance and reminded others of the importance of making people with Down syndrome feel welcome and valued.
Their efforts joined those of people around the world who use the month to speak up for inclusion and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome.
The ambassadors’ participation encouraged the school community to carry that message beyond October through everyday acts of kindness, respect and inclusion.
