Students participating in the Eagle Pass Water Warriors program met with local public service professionals to learn about the essential services that support the community, City of Eagle Pass Waterworks System Director Jorge Barrera reported.
The discussions introduced students to local government operations and the responsibilities involved in serving the public.
Participants heard from professionals whose work involves school district operations, solid waste management and public works.
Barrera thanked Rolando Salinas, Deputy Superintendent for District Operations, Mike Castillo, Maverick County Solid Waste and Landfill Director, and Daniel Ibarra, City of Eagle Pass Public Works Director, for sharing their time, knowledge and experiences with the students. The meeting gave participants an opportunity to ask questions and better understand the work involved in maintaining services that residents depend on each day.
The Eagle Pass Water Works System established the Water Warriors program in April 2023 as a leadership and youth development initiative for Eagle Pass Independent School District high school students.
Students enter through a written application and interview process.
The program combines leadership workshops, meetings with community leaders and educational visits to introduce participants to water resources and public service.
Water conservation is a central part of the program.
Students have developed conservation campaigns, toured water and wastewater facilities and participated in community service projects, including painting fire hydrants and volunteering at local events.
These activities allow students to learn about water management while gaining experience in teamwork, communication and community involvement.
The program also connects students with professionals in different fields, helping them explore careers and understand how decisions made by local leaders affect their community.
Barrera said opportunities such as the recent meeting help prepare Water Warriors to become informed, involved and responsible future community leaders.
