SAFE EP celebrated the launch of a free Narcan vending machine Friday, October 23, 2026 at the downtown Eagle Pass Fire Station, located at 590 Quarry Street in Eagle Pass, Texas expanding community access to medication that can reverse an opioid overdose.
SAFE EP Executive Director and City Councilman Elias Diaz and Mayor Aaron Valdez spoke during the event, which brought together Maverick County Hospital District Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla, MCHD Trustee Stephany Valdez, Councilwoman Jessica Rey Ramon, Assistant City Manager Ivan Morua, police and fire department officials, and community residents.
The launch highlighted the importance of overdose awareness, preparedness and making lifesaving resources accessible to the public.
The vending machine provides Narcan at no cost, helping residents obtain medication they could use to assist someone experiencing an opioid overdose before emergency personnel arrive.
Narcan is the brand name for a nasal spray containing naloxone, a medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids and can restore breathing slowed or stopped by an overdose.
It works on opioids including fentanyl, heroin, morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine and methadone.
When other drugs, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, contain fentanyl, naloxone can reverse the opioid component of an overdose.
Anyone who suspects an opioid overdose should administer Narcan if available and call 911 immediately.
Additional doses may be needed every two to three minutes if the person does not respond or breathing problems return.
Emergency medical attention remains necessary even if the person wakes up.
The new resource gives residents another way to prepare for an emergency and help protect family members, friends and neighbors.
