SAFE EP and Eagle Pass Fire Department Chief Rodolfo Cardona are inviting the community to celebrate the launch of a free Narcan vending machine, expanding local access to medication that can reverse an opioid overdose.
The event is scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026 at 5 p.m. at 1590 Quarry Street in Eagle Pass. Residents are encouraged to attend, learn how the machine works and help spread awareness about the resource.
The vending machine makes Narcan available at no cost, helping residents obtain a medication that could save someone’s life during an emergency.
Narcan is the brand name for a nasal spray containing naloxone, a medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioids and can restore breathing slowed or stopped by an overdose.
It works on opioids including fentanyl, heroin, morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine and methadone.
Awareness and preparedness matter because having naloxone available and knowing when to use it can help a bystander respond before emergency personnel arrive.
Naloxone targets opioids. When other drugs, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, are mixed with fentanyl, it can reverse the opioid component of an overdose.
Anyone who suspects an opioid overdose should administer Narcan if available and call 911 immediately.
Additional doses may be needed every two to three minutes if the person does not respond or breathing problems return.
Emergency medical attention remains necessary even if the person wakes up.
The launch offers residents an opportunity to become familiar with the resource and learn how access to overdose reversal medication can help protect family members, friends and neighbors.
