Residents of Eagle Pass and Maverick County who need affordable health insurance will have an opportunity to enroll in or renew coverage beginning Sunday, November 1, 2026, as the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, opens its annual enrollment period for 2027.
The enrollment period, established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, allows eligible individuals and families to compare health insurance plans, review available benefits and determine whether they qualify for financial assistance to help reduce monthly premiums.
The program is particularly important for residents who are self-employed, unemployed, work for businesses that do not provide health insurance or otherwise lack access to affordable healthcare coverage.
Through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, applicants can compare plans covering essential medical services, including doctor visits, hospitalization, emergency services, prescription medications, preventive care and mental health services.
Financial assistance may be available depending on household income, family size and other eligibility requirements. However, premium costs and available subsidies may differ from previous years, making it important for residents to review their options carefully rather than automatically renewing existing coverage.
For residents living with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, selecting an appropriate health insurance plan can be particularly important because of ongoing medical appointments, prescription medications and specialized treatment.
Residents should carefully examine monthly premiums, deductibles, prescription drug coverage and whether their preferred physicians, specialists and hospitals participate in the insurance plan.
According to HealthCare.gov, individuals must enroll by December 15, 2026, for coverage beginning January 1, 2027. Open Enrollment continues through January 15, 2027, with coverage beginning February 1 for those enrolling after December 15.
Congress passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill in 2025 is scheduled to reduce federal government spending on Medicaid by up to $10 Trillion in the next 10 years, causing millions of Americans to not afford healthcare insurance and lose coverage commencing January 1, 2027.
Individuals who miss the enrollment deadline generally must qualify for a special enrollment period, such as losing existing health coverage, getting married or having a child.
Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) operate under different eligibility rules and accept applications throughout the year.
Residents seeking coverage can visit www.HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 for assistance.
With healthcare expenses continuing to place financial pressure on families, the upcoming enrollment period provides Maverick County residents an opportunity to evaluate their options and obtain health insurance protection for themselves and their loved ones.
