Maverick County Residents to Pay Higher Obamacare Health Insurance Premiums and Face Hurdles as Open Enrollment Begins November 1
By Jose G. Landa
Maverick County residents who depend on the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, will face another difficult year obtaining affordable health insurance as the 2027 open enrollment period begins Sunday, November 1, amid rising premiums, reduced federal assistance and additional eligibility requirements.
The enrollment period, which continues through January 15, 2027, comes at a challenging time for working families, self-employed individuals and residents with chronic medical conditions who depend on insurance for necessary treatment.
According to the nonprofit health policy organization KFF, average benchmark health insurance premiums nationwide are increasing approximately 13 percent for 2027.
The increases follow the expiration of enhanced federal premium tax credits at the end of 2025, eliminating additional assistance that helped millions of Americans reduce their monthly insurance payments.
Although regular subsidies remain available, many households could face substantially higher premiums, particularly those exceeding federal income eligibility limits.
For Maverick County families already struggling with higher grocery prices, housing, utilities, gasoline and diesel, and transportation expenses, higher insurance costs could force difficult financial decisions.
The situation is especially concerning for residents suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and other illnesses requiring regular medical appointments, prescription medications and continued treatment.
Without affordable coverage, some residents may have to postpone medical care or discontinue necessary medications.
National figures already indicate declining participation. According to KFF, Marketplace plan selections decreased by approximately 1.2 million between 2025 and 2026. By February 2026, active, paid coverage had declined approximately 12 percent nationally to 19.2 million individuals.
In Texas, despite approximately 206,000 additional plan selections during the 2026 enrollment period, active coverage subsequently declined by approximately 146,000 individuals.
These figures demonstrate that enrolling in health insurance does not necessarily mean families can afford to maintain coverage.
A July 2025 Episcopal Health Foundation report identified Maverick County among South Texas communities experiencing high Affordable Care Act enrollment alongside elevated uninsured rates, emphasizing the importance of federal healthcare financial assistance.
However, verified county-specific enrollment figures for 2026 were unavailable, but local healthcare professionals anticipate hundreds of Maverick County residents not re-enroll in Obamacare due to loss of federal government income subsidies and higher premiums.
Additional federal requirements involving income verification, eligibility documentation and subsidy repayment could create further difficulties.
Beginning with the 2026 tax year, limits protecting certain taxpayers from repaying excess premium tax credits have been eliminated, potentially leaving families responsible for larger repayments if their actual income exceeds reported estimates.
Certain lawfully present immigrants could also face additional restrictions on federal premium assistance.
Another concern involves Texas’ refusal to expand Medicaid, leaving some low-income adults earning too little to qualify for Marketplace subsidies while remaining ineligible for Medicaid.
Beyond monthly premiums, residents must consider deductibles, copayments, prescription expenses and whether their physicians and hospitals participate in available insurance networks.
A lower monthly premium does not necessarily mean lower overall healthcare expenses.
Residents are encouraged to compare available plans carefully rather than automatically renewing existing coverage.
Those seeking coverage beginning January 1, 2027, must enroll by December 15, 2026. The final enrollment deadline is January 15, 2027, for coverage generally beginning February 1.
