The Mexican Consulate at Eagle Pass Vivian Juarez Mondragon invites the community to participate in a Día de Muertos altar contest on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at the Fort Duncan ruins.
The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., with participants allowed to begin setting up their altars at 9 a.m.
The contest brings the Mexican tradition of honoring departed loved ones to the historic Eagle Pass site.
Participants must incorporate traditional elements of Mexican culture into their displays, with each altar measuring two meters by two meters.
Judges will evaluate creativity, the presence of traditional Mexican elements and the originality of the theme.
Those interested in participating must complete a registration form, which can be requested by emailing culturaleseag@sre.gob.mx.
Participants are also required to record a 30-second horizontal video of their altar on the day of the event and send it to the same email address. The recordings will be used to produce a video for publication on social media.
Organizers ask participants to use only artificial candles. Nothing may be nailed or glued to the ruins or walls.
Día de Muertos altars provide a way for families to remember loved ones through photographs, offerings and decorations that reflect their lives and the traditions passed down through generations.
The consulate’s invitation encourages community members to share that tradition through creative displays while respecting the historic setting.
