EAGLE PASS, Texas — The male suspect arrested in connection with the murder of local nurse Wendy C. Garcia in the Rosita Valley area of Maverick County has been charged with murder and tampering with evidence, with bond set at a combined $1.6 million.
The charges represent a significant development in the investigation into the death of Garcia, a local healthcare professional and mother of four children, whose death has shaken the Eagle Pass and Maverick County community.
The homicide occurred during the early morning hours of Saturday, October 24, 2026 in the Rosita Valley area, where the Maverick County Sheriff’s Department responded to an incident involving a deceased female.
Preliminary information indicated that Garcia’s death involved an alleged domestic violence incident involving her estranged husband, who was subsequently detained by authorities.
Garcia, who worked at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center and STAT Emergency Center, was known for her work in the local healthcare community.
Beyond her professional career, Garcia was a mother of four children who are now left to cope with the tragic loss of their mother.
The suspect now faces a murder charge, a first-degree felony under Texas law that carries a potential punishment of five to 99 years or life imprisonment upon conviction.
The additional charge of tampering with evidence raises further questions about the circumstances surrounding the investigation. Under Texas law, tampering with evidence generally involves allegations that an individual altered, destroyed, concealed or fabricated evidence with the intent to impair its availability in an investigation or official proceeding.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific allegations supporting the evidence-tampering charge.
The combined $1.6 million bond establishes the amount required for the suspect’s release pending further court proceedings, subject to applicable conditions. The filing of criminal charges does not constitute a conviction, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
The case also brings renewed attention to domestic violence in Eagle Pass and Maverick County, where law enforcement agencies have responded to hundreds of family violence incidents in recent years.
According to previously reported figures, the Eagle Pass Police Department and Maverick County Sheriff’s Department recorded a combined 394 family violence incidents in 2024, while 257 domestic violence calls were reported in 2025.
Although the reported figures indicate a decrease, domestic violence advocates have repeatedly cautioned that many incidents go unreported, potentially leaving victims exposed to escalating violence.
As the criminal investigation and judicial proceedings move forward, the community is left mourning the loss of a healthcare worker whose life was cut short and whose four children must now face a future without their mother.
Additional information regarding the suspect’s identity, the circumstances surrounding Garcia’s death and upcoming court proceedings is expected as authorities release further details.
