The Texas Department of Public Safety is increasing public awareness efforts through its “One Pill Kills” campaign as October’s Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month begins.
The month was established by House Bill 3144, signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in 2024, to educate Texans about the dangers of fentanyl and the availability of medication that can reverse an opioid poisoning.
DPS plans to share social media videos throughout October to explain fentanyl’s risks and direct the public to campaign resources.
The DPS Safety Education team is also offering free presentations for schools, churches, community groups and other organizations.
Presentations can be tailored to different audiences and age groups.
“Every conversation, every warning and every effort to share the facts can make a difference,” DPS Col. Freeman F. Martin said in the announcement. He urged Texans to discuss fentanyl’s risks with children and community members.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that DPS says is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl may be mixed with other drugs, including cocaine, heroin and counterfeit prescription pills.
