The Maverick County Hospital District was selected to receive $1,773,293 through two rural healthcare grant initiatives supporting healthcare workforce development and improvements to medical facilities and equipment.
The funding was included in an October 29, 2026, announcement by Governor Greg Abbott involving approximately $87 million for rural healthcare services across Texas.
The federal funding comes through the Rural Health Transformation Program, administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission under the state’s Rural Texas Strong initiative.
MCHD was awarded $725,000 through Initiative 4.1, The Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team. The initiative supports the recruitment, training and retention of physicians and other healthcare professionals serving rural communities.
The district also was awarded $1,048,293 through Initiative 6.1, Infrastructure and Capital Investments for Rural Texas. That initiative provides assistance for medical facility improvements, equipment and other healthcare infrastructure needs.
MCHD Chief Executive Officer Nestor Bonilla said the grants would provide an opportunity to strengthen local healthcare services by supporting medical professionals and addressing infrastructure needs.
Bonilla emphasized that the additional resources could help the district recruit and retain healthcare workers while making investments intended to benefit Maverick County residents for years to come.
The two awards address challenges faced by rural healthcare providers, including shortages of medical professionals and the need to maintain and modernize facilities. Workforce funding could support efforts to bring additional healthcare professionals to the community and retain existing personnel, while infrastructure funding could help improve the resources available to deliver care.
The awards come as MCHD continues efforts to expand access to medical services, including urgent care. Specific district projects, equipment purchases and workforce activities to be supported by the grants were not detailed in the information provided.
Although MCHD was selected for the funding, access to and expenditure of the money remain subject to applicable state requirements and the finalization of grant agreements.
